Rode NTG 4+ Test Kinda vs. the Sennheiser ew 100 G3 with ME 2

Wednesday, June 17th, 2015

I bought a Rode NTG 4+ the other day and wanted to test it out and see how it performs so I put it on a boom and hooked it up to my Tascam DR-70D and filmed with my Panasonic GH4. I recorded the audio separately and also sent the audio straight to the camera. I switch back and forth between the different audio sources and labeled them so you know what you are listening to. I leveled everything out to about -12db and peaking at about -6db.

In the past I only really shot with either a Sennheiser wireless lav setup or an on camera Rode Video Mic Pro so I wanted to see how the sound differed between the lav mic and shotgun mic. The shotgun mic is boomed and about arm’s length away and the lav is clipped on my shirt. I like the lav mic it is very warm but the more I listen to in comparison to the Rode NTG 4+ shotgun mic the more it sounds a little muddy to me. I like the sound of the NTG 4+ but not as much as the NTG 3 but the NTG 3 is phantom power only and because I shoot mostly DSLRs I need a mic that has battery power. When Rode comes out with a NTG 3+ that has battery power I will most likely buy it as I really like the warm sound of the NTG 3. It will likely be a good combination of the warmth of my Sennheiser ME 2 lav and the clear dialogue of the NTG 4+. I did look at the Sennheisher ME66 but I felt it was a little too long for on camera usage. The MKE 600 sounds pretty good and is short enough to mount on camera but I felt like the pick up pattern was just a little to wide and I wanted something more directional other than that I was really close to buying it. Anyway let me know what mic you have and what you thoughts are.
